Meet the Maker Feat. OB Story

OB Story is redefining the modern woman’s closet with a unique assortment of minimalistic garments that make a major statement. It all started with sister duo, Amanda and Marisol, creating this one-of-a-kind brand in the most organic way possible. We sat down with Amanda to learn all about the brand and what's next for OB Story.

What inspired you to launch OB Story?

Since we were little, clothes and creativity spoke to Marisol - my older sister / designer / business partner - and myself. Little Marisol would pretend to be a model, trying clothes on, and I would draw designs on a piece of paper, inspired by what she was wearing. Once I even created a statue, made of Play-Doh, with the exact outfit she was wearing that day, and I would mirror her movements with it.

We realized over time that it was a somewhat fulfilling sensation to design clothes, and we slowly progressed from creating individual pieces to managing production on a bigger scale. Many people say they have a passion for what they do, but I feel in our case this is especially true.  

What was the most challenging part of launching your brand?

We were clearly not aware of how much work and time it takes to get to a stage where you are happy with your products. And once you're there, much more work needs to be done: photography, marketing, sales, finance etc. The key here for us was to apply the "80:20" rule, prioritize what is really important and brings you forward, and then make a conscious decision NOT to do certain things, as there are only 24 hours in a day and you can't possibly get EVERYTHING done.

How would you describe the aesthetic of the brand?

OB Story draws inspiration from young professional women in urban environments. These females often wear minimalist clothes and the occasional statement piece. We love to describe our brand character as "Bold looking Delicate". We use a lot of pale/desaturated colors, contrasting them with black.

How did you come up with the name OB Story?

OB stands for Orange Blue; it has to do with a color personality test we once did. The result was that I, Amanda, am orange. To summarize, the my results are something like: creative, impulsive, likes to go against the curve. Marisol, however, is blue: loyal, self-disciplined, passionate and creative. We initially called our brand "OB Anthology” but soon changed it to "OB Story" which sounds a bit less pretentious and shorter.

What’s next for your brand?

We have spent a lot of time on creative work and marketing so far - now we need to focus more on sales aspects and lock our distribution strategy. We are currently identifying boutiques and other potential partners throughout the U.S. There's a lot of hard work ahead of us.

Why did you choose to exhibit at POOLTRADESHOW?

We believe POOL is a great place for emerging brands like ours. I like the artsy look and feel of the show; it combines creativity and business without being overly corporate. I believe this is the perfect breeding ground for young designers that have yet to find their place in the business world. 

What is your favorite part of POOLTRADESHOW?

I have only been to POOL once before; I went as a visitor, not as an exhibitor. I remember being excited about a lot of things, especially how creative designers managed to transform a small space into a home for their brand for a few days, with fresh decoration and visualization ideas that brought their brand character to life. This year, I am very much looking forward to meeting potential distribution partners as well as other designers who are on the same journey and share my passion, joy - and maybe face similar challenges. Besides networking, a part of me is also just looking forward to having a good time in a creative environment!
