MAGIC Fall 2017 Fashion Trends: Boyfriend Denim Jackets
Oversize jean jackets took the trade show by storm.

So long, all things shrunken.
During UBM Fashion’s MAGIC trade show, brands presented oversize everything, but jean jackets were the main item that underwent the magnifying treatment. In line with the borrowed-from-the-boys trend that’s been popular for several seasons, slouchy and aggressively distressed denim jackets were fresh and infused a tomboy tone.
At the show, variations featuring embroidery detailing on the back at MP1 and understated embroidery such as AG Jeans were especially successful in achieving a West-coast-meets-downtown aesthetic. Distressed details were wildly popular — did the boyfriend put up a fight for his jacket? Neon Blonde and Siwy included versions that featured minimal to extreme rips and fraying edges. The more shredded, the better.
The full-throttle distressing and embroidery contributed to a general casual yet rebellious tone that invaded the entire trade show. Nearly not one brand displayed a collection of fully polished or business-casual looks, no matter how modern. Millennials do prefer to work out of the office and in less traditional surroundings — the jean jacket makes sense.
Seen at the Alexander Wang, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Topshop Unique and Chanel spring 2017 collections, these styles are gaining momentum for fall. Championed by social supermodels Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid, these reworked Nineties staples are frequently worn casually shrugged off the shoulder; they’re even better when paired with jeans to match.
Of course, fashion bloggers are quick to catch on; slouchy boyfriend denim jackets have been seen on the Insta-feeds of Natalie Suarez of Natalie off Duty; Julie Sariñana of Sincerely, Jules, and Nicolette Mason of her namesake blog; they have all snapped themselves in this style.
Consumer demand requiring faster delivery of seasonless styles coupled with the unavoidable Millennial nostalgia propelled the jean jacket back into the spotlight. What’s more, brands have been charged to come up with climate-change friendly collections that provide pieces primed for layering.
